When you live on an island blessed with almost year-round sunshine, your flip flops are almost as important as your car keys. And when you live on an island as small as Malta, you’re never more than 15 minutes away from a little piece of paradise.
Being surrounded by sea means there are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore and get lost in. Ask anybody, and they will have their favourite spot, where at a moment’s notice they can escape to, and get away from it all.
Whether you have a preference for rocky, pebble or soft sandy beaches, you’re bound to find a spot that tickles your fancy.
Malta’s sister island of Gozo is only a short boat ride away and is also full of surprises with ‘Ramla il-Hamra’, a natural beach made up of purely red sand. But if crystal clear water is more your thing – the Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino is not far away.
The months of June, July and August are very popular with tourists, however summer starts much earlier here and one can actually start enjoying the beaches as early as April and take advantage of great expanses of pristine open spaces populated by very few people.Water temperatures in summer average out at a lovely 25 degrees Celsius and are simply perfect for cooling off after working on your tan.
A few of my personal favourite spots include:
Golden Bay - a large bay with stunning vistas and soft golden sand. It’s very popular with locals, families and foreigners alike.
Gnejna – a secluded rocky beach, for those that are looking for some space without children.
Mellieha Bay is one of the most popular beaches in Malta– A variety of Water-Sports are possible from this beach.
Ramla il Hamra – This beach in Gozo is known for its idyllic landscape and famous for its red sand.
St George’s Bay – This is the closest sandy beach to the Corinthia Hotel St George’s Bay and very popular with younger generation, with plenty of bars and restaurants nearby.
